I’m not much of a baker, though I do occasionally get the baking itch. This simple homemade bread recipe satisfies my baking urge and keeps for up to three days. I do want to callout that I have not used a bread pan for baking this. Instead, I shape the dough and bake on a pizza stone.

Ingredients

  • Olive oil
  • 2 1/4 tsp yeast
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 cups flour
  • Salt

Directions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl combine the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let sit for 10-15 minutes until bubbly.
  2. Mix in 2 cups of flour and a couple shakes of salt. Stir until dough forms. Slowly mix in additional flour until the dough is slightly sticky, but still pulls away from the side of the bowl.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Shape into a ball and place in a slightly oiled bowl.
  4. Cover with a towel and let rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  5. Punch down the dough to release any air pockets.
  6. Shape the dough into a long or round loaf. Place on a lightly floured baking sheet. Preheat oven to 375 degrees and let dough rise again while the oven heats.
  7. Once the oven has preheated, place onto a pizza stone or baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden. The loaf should sound hollow when you knock on it.

Let cool for 20-30 minutes before slicing into the homemade bread. To store, let the loaf fully cool, wrap it in foil, and place in a cool dry place. It will keep for up to 3 days.
